What to Expect in Therapy
Starting therapy is a meaningful step, and it’s normal to have questions about how it works, what happens during sessions, and what to expect along the way. Our goal is to make that process clear, straightforward, and supportive so you can focus on your care — not the logistics.
Finding the Right Therapist
There are different paths to the right fit.
Different therapists support different needs. Some specialize in anxiety, trauma, life transitions, neurodivergence, identity, or family dynamics. Others work deeply with faith, career stress, self-esteem, or relationship concerns.
If you already know who you want to work with, great — request an appointment and we’ll take it from there. If you’re unsure, we can match you based on your goals, clinical needs, lived experience preferences, or scheduling availability.

Getting Started
What does the intake process look like and how long will it take?
Initial Intake & Matching
-
You can choose a therapist directly, or our team can guide you based on your goals, preferences, and availability.
Insurance Verification (if applicable)
-
For most clients, we verify benefits before your first session so you know what to expect financially — no surprise bills.
First Appointment
-
Your first session is about getting to know you — your history, goals, and what brings you to therapy now. There is no right or wrong way to show up.
Ongoing Support
-
Sessions are typically weekly or biweekly depending on preference, goals, and clinical recommendation. Together we build skills, insight, and strategies that support long-term well-being.

Therapy for Children
& Teens
We treat teens & children ages 10 and up.
We provide online therapy for children and teens ages 10 and up. Sessions are tailored to the child’s age, needs, and comfort level, and are provided by licensed clinicians experienced in working with young people. For younger clients, parents or guardians are involved in the process as required, especially at the start of care. As therapy continues, we work to balance parental involvement with the child or teen’s growing need for privacy and independence.
Privacy & Confidentiality for Teens
We understand that teens often worry about what will — and won’t — be shared with their parents. These concerns are valid, and we take them seriously.
-
Therapy sessions are private and confidential, within the limits of the law.
-
Clinicians do not share session details with parents unless there is a safety concern or a legal requirement to do so.
-
We clearly explain confidentiality at the beginning of treatment so teens know what to expect.
-
Our goal is to create a safe, respectful space where teens can speak openly and honestly.
Parents are kept informed about overall progress and safety, but therapy is most effective when teens feel trusted and heard. If you have questions about whether therapy is appropriate for your child, or how privacy works for teens, we’re happy to help before you schedule an appointment.

Privacy & Confidentiality
Is online therapy confidential and HIPAA-compliant?
Your sessions are confidential and protected under HIPAA & HITECH. Clients often choose telehealth for the added comfort and privacy of receiving care from home. For minors and young adults, our privacy practices include thoughtful boundaries around what is — and is not — shared with parents or guardians.
If you have specific privacy needs (e.g., you live with others, you are a college student, etc.), your therapist can help strategize around creating a safe session environment. You can view our privacy practices here.
Your therapist will also review confidentiality policies during your first session.
Creating a Therapy Space
Most people already have everything they need
Online therapy works best when you’re able to join from a private, comfortable environment where you can speak freely and without interruption. Many clients choose a bedroom, home office, parked car, or other space that feels safe and contained.
It can also help to schedule sessions at a time when you won’t be rushing directly into another obligation. Therapy often brings up thoughts and feelings that benefit from a few minutes of transition afterward.
For technology, any device with a camera and microphone will work — phone, tablet, or computer. A stable internet or cellular connection is required for telehealth sessions. Headphones can help improve privacy and sound quality.
You’re welcome to make the space your own. Many clients keep tissues, water, tea, a fidget tool, or a blanket nearby. And if you have pets, they’re always welcome to make a guest appearance.
Grounding tools and sensory supports can make sessions feel more comfortable and focused. If you’d like, you can explore our Mindfulness Room, which offers guided relaxation, breathing exercises, and coping tools that pair well with therapy.

How
Sessions Work
Therapy that fits your routine and your space
Sessions take place over secure, HIPAA-compliant video. You can join from wherever you feel comfortable — home, school, work, or any private space.
Most people find that being in their own environment makes it easier to open up, stay consistent, and build momentum in therapy. There’s no waiting room, no commute, and no need to rearrange your entire day.
All you need is a device with a camera, a stable internet connection, and a space where you can speak freely. Headphones are optional but often help with privacy and sound quality.
