Before you say something you regret, lose your temper or pick up that drink- H.A.L.T.

H.A.L.T. is a tried and true acronym that stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, and Tired.

It is commonly used in 12 step circles as a recovery tool to apply when a craving or an urge to drink or use drugs strikes. But this simple phrase can remind all of us to take a spot inventory throughout the day to make sure we are taking care of our most basic needs. It seems simple enough but in this day and age we are all trying to cram more and more into the day.

Hungry?

Hunger can be an emotional or physical need. Make sure you are choosing healthy nutrient-rich meals and snacks. Sometimes we may be hungry for the less obvious things such as accomplishment, affirmation or to simply be understood. Ask yourself what is really driving your “hunger”.

Angry?

Anger is an emotion that calls for us to take some kind of action. But before we act it can be extremely beneficial to take a deep breath, journal, get some distance, or take a brisk walk. Find an anger management strategy that works for you so you can respond in a calm and rational way.

Lonely?

Have you reached out to anyone lately? Connect with others that want to see you succeed and be happy.

Tired?

A good night’s sleep or a short nap might be all you need to feel rejuvenated.
